Arthur C. Clarke
Arthur C. Clarke föddes den sextonde december 1917 i staden Minehead, Somerset, England. 1936 flyttade Clarke till London, där han började arbeta för British Interplanetary Society (BIS). Under andra världskriget tjäsntgjorde han i RAF, som radar-officer. Efter kriget återvände han till London och BIS, där han satt i ledningen 1946-47 och 1950-53. 1945 publicerade han en teknisk uppsats om satellitkommunikation, något som blev verklighet först tjugofem år senare. 1948 tog han examen i fysik och matematik vid King's College i London.
Den femtonde juni 1953, gifte han sig med Marilyn Mayfield, en amerikanska. De skilde sig i december samma år. Clarke kommenterade det med: "The marriage was incompatibe from the beginning. It was sufficient proof that I wasn't the marrying type, although I think everybody should marry once"
1954 skrev Clarke till Dr Harry Wexler, då chef vid Scientific Services Division, U.S. Weather Bureau, om sina idéer om användningen av satelliter för väderprognoser. Detta ledde till utvecklandet av en ny gren inom meteorologin, där man använde satelliter och raketer för att samla data om väderförhållanden.
1954 började Clarke alltmer intressera sig för dykning och 1956 flyttade han till Sri Lanka bl.a. för detta.
1964 skrev Clarke manuset till 2001: A Space Odyssey tillsammans med Stanley Kubrick. Omskrivningen till roman gjorde Clarke efter det att filmen hade gjorts. Den har sedan följts av tre andra romaner i samma serie.
Arthur C. Clarke är en av världens mest kända och omtyckta sf-författare.
