G.K. Chesterton
Gilbert Keith Chesterton föddes i London den 29:e maj 1874. Han var en oerhört produktiv skriftställare och betraktade sig i första hand som journalist. Han skrev om de mest skiftande ämnen och lämnade efter sig över sjuttio böcker med poem, noveller, pjäser, paradoxer, romaner, biografier, teologi m.m. Några av de böcker han är mest känd för är de fem novellsamlingarna om den gåtlösande fader Brown. Chesterton värderade detektivromangenren högt och skrev förutom fader Brown-novellerna ytterligare några andra noveller inom samma genre. Man tror att Chestertons biktfader John O'Connor har stått modell för fader Brown. Förutom att vara roande läsning i största allmänhet, så finns det alltid ett budskap i Chestertons skrivande, så även i dessa noveller. Fader Brown slåss mot människornas fördomar och mot hedendom, och novellerna om honom, kan betraktas som en enda lång katolsk predikan - en humoristisk sådan.
Söndagen den 30:e juli 1922 konverterade Chesterton från den anglikanska kyrkan till den romersk-katolska och blev katolik.
Chesterton hade många och starka åsikter och inga problem att verbalt försvara dem. Han var en framstående samhällskritiker - konservativ i sin åskådning. Han trodde inte på socialism, men ville ändå att alla skulle få del av det privata ägandet. Han grundade ett eget parti med "distributism" på programmet - "alla borde få äga tre tunnland och en ko". Partiet var mot både kapitalismens makt över marknaden och socialismens statskontroll.
Han blev dock inte mest känd som politisk tänkare utan snarare som kristen apologet. En av de böcker han blivit mest känd för i denna genre är "The Everlasting Man", om vilken C.S. Lewis lär ha sagt att det är en av de böcker som betytt mest för honom.
Chesterton dog den 14:e juni 1936 i Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire.
